Namibia offers landscapes of such stark beauty and graphic simplicity that they seem almost abstract. The towering red dunes of the Namib Desert, some of the tallest in the world, create extraordinary patterns of light and shadow that have made this country a mecca for fine art landscape photographers.
Sossusvlei and its famous neighbor Deadvlei are the centerpieces of this collection. The white clay pan of Deadvlei, dotted with 900-year-old camel thorn trees and surrounded by rust-red dunes, creates scenes of such surreal beauty that they almost defy belief. I have spent many pre-dawn hours in this magical place, waiting for the first light to strike the dune crests while the valley floor remains in deep shadow.
The dunes themselves are endlessly fascinating subjects. Big Daddy and Dune 45, rising over 300 meters from the desert floor, create bold graphic shapes against the clear Namibian sky. The interplay of the dunes' sharp ridgelines and smooth flanks, painted in colors ranging from deep red to pale apricot depending on the light, offers infinite compositional possibilities.
Beyond the famous dunes, Namibia offers other remarkable landscapes. The Skeleton Coast, where the cold Benguela current meets the hot desert, creates atmospheric conditions of incredible photographic potential - ethereal fogs, dramatic light, and the haunting presence of shipwrecks along the shoreline.
The night skies of Namibia rank among the darkest and clearest on Earth, opening opportunities for astrophotography that reveals the Milky Way in all its glory above the desert landscape. Several images in this collection combine the graphic shapes of the dunes with the cosmic splendor of the southern sky.
Namibia's wildlife also features in this collection - the desert-adapted elephants and oryx that survive in this harsh environment add life and scale to the vast landscape.
All prints are produced using archival processes that preserve the subtle desert tones and dramatic contrasts of these images for generations.
